However, like other vehicles, it has a few common problems that are present in multiple model years. It’s not the worst vehicle, but it’s far from being the best midsize SUV. Luckily the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a pretty good option.
Transmission problems make the Chevy Traverse not the best midsize SUV
The Chevrolet Traverse is a solid but flawed midsize SUV. It has transmission problems, which means used Chevy Traverse models aren’t always the best option. These issues began with the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse and lasted up until 2018. However, even some of the later models have small transmission problems. There are also reports of various models, mostly 2018, not shifting to park.
The worst transmission problem owners of the 2009 through 2018 Traverse face is transmission failure. Luckily, Chevrolet released a technical service bulletin in an attempt to fix the problem. Additionally, there are reports of later models not responding to being put in gear. Some drivers reported that putting the car in drive and pressing the accelerator resulted in the vehicle only slowing moving forward as though it was in neutral. This problem began with the 2015 Chevy Traverse.
Common Chevrolet Traverse engine problems
Common engine problems are another reason the Chevrolet Traverse isn’t among the best midsize SUVs. There are many reports of the 2010 Chevrolet Traverse engine leaving people stranded. Apparently, the engine would stop working while in use, which can also be a safety issue with the SUV. Though the automaker fixed the problem in later years, it still existed until around the 2015 model. Though, later models have much fewer complaints.
Another engine problem the Chevy Traverse has is excessive oil consumption. This issue happens mainly with the 2009 Chevy Traverse, but it’s an issue that owners of all model years should look out for. A vehicle using more oil than expected could lead to more significant problems, such as premature engine failure. Of course, excessive oil consumption also causes reduced performance.
Various problems also make it not the best midsize SUV
Used Chevy Traverse models also aren’t the best idea because the vehicle suffers from steering issues. This is mostly a problem for the 2009 until 2011 Chevy Traverse model years. The issue is that the wheel would become difficult to turn, which increases the risk of accidents. The steering problem mainly presents itself between 80,000 and 110,000 miles on the odometer.
According to Consumer Reports, the vehicle also has airbag problems. These issues exist for the 2014-2017 Chevy Traverse models. There was a recall for the defective airbags. Unfortunately, the inflator would rupture in some cases. Because of this, sharp objects could cause injury to the driver and/or passengers.
Again, the Chevrolet Traverse is an overall good midsize SUV. However, it’s not the best midsize SUV because it’s so flawed. Though imperfect, the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse is a fairly safe bet.
