The Mustang Mach-E and the New Trend of Performance Cars Turned SUVs
The Ford Mustang Mach-E entered the market for the 2021 model year and has caused quite a stir from automotive traditionalists. Now, it’ll soon be joined by SUV forms of the Ford Mustang’s two biggest rivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Corvette. Both the Camaro and Corvette SUVs are rumored to be scheduled for 2025 and are sure to deliver out-of-this-world performance. However, only some people are excited about this performance car-turned-SUV trend.
Are the Ford Mustang Mach-E and friends needed?
The problem many people still have with the Ford Mustang Mach-E is that they don’t think it’s needed. Many feel that Ford could have made a new SUV instead of using the Mustang name. Since the Corvette and Camaro SUVs have been mentioned, the sentiment has been mostly the same. However, the electric Ford SUV has been pretty popular since its release, indicating a need for it. More than likely, these upcoming SUV forms of the Corvette and the Camaro will experience success. Though successful, the Ford Mustang Mach-E isn’t a powerhouse seller.
There is a need for these new vehicles because they cater to a different group of buyers. Many people can’t go out and buy a Chevy Camaro because they need more space. However, offering a larger version of the iconic sports car allows them to experience these cars, but in a different way. In addition, these SUVs also represent a way for the Mustang, Corvette, and the Camaro to remain relevant in the lives of some diehard fans as their lives change.
The Classic Corvette turned SUV
Chevrolet hopes that fans of the classic Corvette will be interested in its upcoming SUV offering. So far, it seems the Corvette SUV will differ from the electric Mustang because it won’t be EV only. In fact, the main plan is to offer a few types of internal combustion engine options. If rumors hold, the Corvette SUV could offer a maximum output of up to 682 horsepower.
There is also talk that this Chevy SUV will come in two sizes. One smaller and, of course, the other rather larger. According to Car and Driver, the larger of the two would use the rumored 682 hp 6.2-liter V8, which is similar to the one found in the Cadillac Escalade V. Regarding performance, the Corvette SUV could compete with luxury options such as the Lamborghini Urus. Still, the Ford Mustang Mach-E will probably be one of the names most mentioned along side it.
Camaro SUV
As many know, the Chevrolet Camaro is one of the most popular sports cars ever. However, the upcoming Chevy SUV version of the legendary car could appeal to more people. Though not officially confirmed, it’s speculated that the Camaro SUV will be an EV, like the electric Mustang. Not much is known about this crossover SUV, but it is assumed that it will use GM’s Ultium battery pack.
The trend of automakers turning performance cars into SUVs is unsettling to some. For longtime fans of these cars, the belief is that it hurts their legacy to sell them as anything other than sports cars. However, with the longtime popularity of the Ford Mustang, the Corvette, and the Camaro, it only makes sense that automakers would want to reach more people. Sports cars aren’t practical for everyone, so it’s smart to offer an SUV version, especially since it has proven successful with the electric Mustang.
