People looking for the best new cars have many options regarding engines. When this topic comes up, most people think of how many cylinders their cars have. However, car buyers can also decide if they have a naturally aspirated engine or something a bit more souped-up, like a turbocharged engine. Here are some of the advantages of getting a vehicle with a naturally aspirated engine. 

What is a naturally aspirated engine?

The biggest difference between a naturally aspirated engine and turbo or supercharged examples is the way they accomplish air intake. According to Car Parts, a naturally aspirated engine uses only atmospheric pressure for its intake. However, a turbocharged engine uses a turbo to increase the air pressure. Of course, a supercharged engine does something similar. 

People decide to get cars with turbocharged engines for a few reasons. For one, they can be more efficient, as the engines are usually smaller. Also, the turbocharger, or supercharger, adds more power, often making the car faster. People may also get various types of turbochargers because of the sounds they make, which many gearheads consider more satisfying.

The Naturally aspirated engine is more reliable

There is some debate on this topic. However, most agree that a naturally aspirated engine is likely to last longer than turbocharged engines. This is the case because NA engines have fewer moving parts and are, therefore, much simpler than their souped-up counterparts. Additionally, naturally aspirated engines run cooler than turbo or supercharged powerhouses. 

The cars are usually cheaper

Vehicles with a naturally aspirated engine are also usually cheaper than the ones with turbos. This lower cost is for a few reasons, mainly because the engines are more affordable for manufacturers. Of course, there may be exceptions to this rule, but you’ll generally pay less for a vehicle with an NA engine than one that has been enhanced with a turbo or supercharger. 

Naturally aspirated engines are also cheaper to maintain due to their simple design and lower operating temperatures. 

Better throttle response

Another significant advantage of vehicles with naturally aspirated engines is the throttle response. NA engines have immediate throttle response, whereas turbocharged engines have a delay. Because of this, drivers who have an NA engine get the acceleration they want when they want it. However, people with a turbocharged car must wait for the turbo to kick in. This delay is called turbo lag. 

Still, despite the advantages, there are many reasons why some people may want a turbocharged engine. Luckily, many of the best new cars offer both.
