Pontiac made some of the best sports cars in American automotive history. However, the automaker has been absent from the market for a number of years. Luckily, its legacy is still alive, though not as much as it should be. Still, there have been recent rumblings that Pontiac will begin making new models. However, some wonder where the automaker would fit in today outside of the fame the Pontiac Aztek has achieved thanks to Breaking Bad.

Is Pontiac making new models of cars like the Aztec?

Many people may remember Pontiac for the Aztek, as it was heavily featured in Breaking Bad. Because of that, some may have a sour opinion of the now-defunct automaker. However, Pontiac made some pretty impressive models, especially the older versions of the GTO and the Firebird. Still, a recent picture began floating around social media that read as an announcement that the automaker was coming back.

Of course, there have been subtle talks for years of Pontiac making new models, but there’s never been anything concrete. Unfortunately for some, GM Authority is reporting that the advert that made its rounds on social media is fake, which means there won’t be any new Pontiac models anytime soon. However, this also means there won’t be an attempt at a new Pontiac Aztek, so maybe it’s a win.

Why did the Pontiac go out of business?

It’s always sad when automakers discontinue cars, but it’s worse when an entire company stops producing new rides. Regarding Pontiac, the automaker has a legacy stretching beyond even models like the Firebird, the GTO, or the Aztec. General Motors introduced the brand in 1926, and it was a massive part of American culture until 2010.

Between those years, Pontiac made some of the best sports cars, but it also became known for a number of family vehicles that people still revere today. Notably, Oprah even gave away one of the final Pontiac G6 models to her entire studio audience. Sadly, the level of publicity the stunt garnered wasn’t enough to save the automaker.

So, why are there no new Pontiac models? As usual, much of it relates to sales, as Pontiac hadn’t seen its glory days in years when GM decided to give it the AX. In fact, the automaker hadn’t been profitable for a while. Additionally, GM was experiencing much financial hardship and needed to restructure. Of course, the financial crisis also didn’t do any favors.

Still, it is interesting to consider how Pontiac would fit into the world today. The fake advert that circulated teased that its first car would be a hybrid, which wouldn’t be surprising.
