Many people around the globe depend on their favorite ride-share app or taxi to get around. This is especially the case because more people are deciding against owning cars. However, the best ride-share apps are becoming more expensive. This may be even more true for people in Oregon, as one city is considering charging an extra fee per ride

The favorite ride-share app (s) for Oregon residents may be getting more expensive

Many people who don’t own vehicles have a favorite ride-share app. Often, this preference is a result of the quality and apparent level of safety the platform provides. However, according to OPB, this could become more costly for people in Eugene, Oregon. Reports say that the city is considering applying a 50 cents per ride charge for ride-share apps and taxis. This effort is to combat the city’s financial struggles due to rising costs.

Eugene began regulating the ride-share app business in 2018. At the time, the city council approved a cost-per-ride fee. However, officials didn’t see fit to collect the fee until recently. Currently, they are deciding whether they will collect the fee and what to use it for. Right now, the fee is only for the city’s ride-share oversight program. They will decide whether to expand it next month.

The ride-share app fee is significant for the city of Eugene because it would generate around $350,000 per year. Additionally, city officials included the revenue in their most recent budgetary plans. Other cities in Oregon currently charge a similar fee. In most cases, an additional 50 cents charge won’t deter people without a vehicle from using rideshare platforms and apps. However, some are questioning where the additional charges will stop, especially as the services themselves have gotten more expensive.
