Stellantis CEO called a “disgrace” after layoff announcement
Like many automakers, Stellantis has had a challenging year regarding sales. In fact, the automaker is having one of its worst years on record, with many dealerships left swamped with inventory. Now, Stellantis may be implementing more layoffs thanks to low sales and plant changes related to some of its vehicles, including the Ram 1500 Classic.
More layoffs are coming to Stellantis
According to Fox2 Detroit, Stellantis may be laying off about 2,000 union workers at its Warren plant. The plant only has about 3,700 employees, which means this is a pretty extreme reduction in labor. The Stellantis layoffs are coming after the automaker decided to discontinue the Ram 1500 Classic, one of the trucks produced at the plant. Additionally, Stellantis is moving production of the Ram 1500 Tradesman to a different plant.
Currently, the Warren plant still makes the Jeep Wagoneer. Production of the Ram Tradesman will shift to the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant. According to Stellantis regarding the layoffs, “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren (Michigan) Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year. As a result, Stellantis announced today that the plant will move from a two-shift to a one-shift operating pattern in General Assembly. Other operations within the plant will remain on two shifts to support Jeep Wagoneer production.”
Now, the Union behind the employees at the plant had this to say about the layoffs, “Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares is a disgrace and an embarrassment to a once-great American company. While GM and Ford report fantastic profits and increased sales, Stellantis is going backwards. Meanwhile, Tavares jacks up his own pay by 56 percent while laying off thousands of autoworkers.”
The Union rep continued, “The American taxpayer has invested in Stellantis. Workers have invested in Stellantis. Consumers have invested in Stellantis. It’s time for Stellantis to invest in us.”
Unless something changes, the Stellantis layoffs will happen around the start of October.
