Naturally, there’s a robust conversation surrounding transmissions in vehicles. Many people say they wouldn’t want a continuously variable transmission. However, there’s something much worse, and that’s having a failing transmission. Luckily, there are a few symptoms of a bad transmission. Some can be harder for drivers to notice, but others might be more apparent.

Weird sounds are symptoms of a bad transmission

Naturally, different vehicles with different types of transmissions can emit varying noises. This is particularly the case for those with a continuously variable transmission. However, when looking for symptoms of a bad transmission, it makes sense to start with sounds. Typically, these will be noises you’ve never heard your vehicle make, such as buzzing, whining, clunking, or humming.

The previously mentioned noises are often associated with transmission failure. Drivers should take their cars to a mechanic right away if they notice them. It’s important to note that the sounds don’t determine how bad off the transmission is or even if it’s necessarily the problem, as these noises could be associated with the engine.

Leaking transmission fluid

Regarding symptoms of a bad transmission, noticing fluid leaking from your car is a tale-tale sign. According to Sun Auto Service, transmission fluid is usually red in color, and people often describe it as being slippier than other substances cars use. Transmission fluid leaks are bad because the substance lubricates various components, and running a vehicle with low levels is an easy way to cause transmission failure.

If drivers notice the leak soon enough, the issue could be fixed. However, waiting too long could cause expensive problems. If you’re lucky, the issue may be with a gasket, which means you may only need a transmission power flush.

Various off behaviors are symptoms of a bad transmission

There are many symptoms of a bad transmission, and some come in the form of behaviors. For starters, if you notice that the car is shaking or jerking, there’s a chance you either have a bad transmission or you might be on the way there. The same is true if you notice hesitation when the gears are shifted. People with manual transmissions might notice that the gears seem to grind.

Drivers who notice symptoms of a bad transmission need to seek the help of a mechanic. As stated, doing something about the potential issue early on could be beneficial. However, waiting and letting the problem solve itself could cause further damage to the transmission. This is the last thing anyone wants, as it’s such an expensive fix. Proper maintenance can also prolong the life of a transmission.
