The Toyota Motor Corporation is a Japanese automotive manufacturing company that also owns the
Lexus luxury brand. As one of the best-selling marques worldwide and the largest company in all of Japan, Toyota is best known for its incredibly popular crossover SUV lineup (including the
RAV4 and the
Highlander), its dependable and affordable sedans (such as the
Corolla and
Camry), and its early and continued exploration of alternative fuel vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (the
Mirai), hybrids (the
Prius), and
EVs (the upcoming
bZ4X).
The history of Toyota began with Toyota Industries, which was founded in 1926 as a machine manufacturer (firstly of textile looms). After the company's first vehicle (
the Toyota A1 prototype) was completed in 1935, the Toyota Motor Corporation was created as a spinoff/subsidiary in 1937 to focus entirely on automobile production. The company's early growth was also helped by the Japanese government's decision to prevent the import of
Ford and
GM cars into Japan, lessening competition.
