Mercedes-AMG is an automotive subsidiary that focuses on designing and crafting high-performance trim levels, variants, parts, and customization options of existing Mercedes-Benz models. Mercedes-AMG is owned by Mercedes-Benz, which is in turn owned by Daimler AG.
AMG stands for Aufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach (the last names of its founders and one of their home towns). It was originally set up as an independent firm specializing in racing engine parts and performance enhancements. Among the firm’s first projects were upgrade and accessory packages for Mercedes-Benz roadsters and sedans. These packages were custom ordered and included options such as new intake valves, cams, shock absorbers, wheels, transmissions, and a variety of purely cosmetic changes for an aggressive or sporty appearance. Additionally, outside of its customization options, Mercedes-AMG heavily participated in motor racing, helping develop or improve Mercedes-Benz race cars.
Daimler took a controlling interest in Mercedes-AMG in 1999 and later became the sole owner, making it an official subsidiary in 2005. Most of the Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicle catalog now offers models with available AMG enhancements and AMG hand-built engines.
