The Tesla Cybertruck Surpasses the Rivian R1T
The Cybertruck has been one of the most significant topics in the auto industry since before it hit the market. Its biggest competition is the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, both of which were successful in 2023. Now, the Tesla Cybertruck has overtaken the Rivian R1T in new vehicle registrations for 2024, as the Ford F-150 Lighting remains on top. All three stand as some of the best battery-powered pickup trucks.
The Tesla Cybertruck is a success in 2024, as is the Ford F-150 Lightning
Things haven’t been easy for the Tesla Cybertruck. There have been recalls, rust complaints, and even one YouTuber who injured his finger in it. However, it overtook the Rivian R1T in sales and registrations for March. This is despite many considering the R1T one of the best pickup trucks in the battery-powered segment.
Notably, the Rivian R1T was the first battery-powered pickup truck sold in the US when it hit the market in 2021. Regarding sales in March of 2024, there were 1,158 new Tesla Cybertruck models registered. According to S&P Global Mobility, the R1T only had 548 models sold and registered. Despite the success of the Tesla Cybertruck, the Ford 150 Lightning was still dominant, as it had 2,893 registrations for the month.
This is also great news for Ford as the F-150 Lightning’s sales are almost three times what they were in 2023. However, it’s a different story for the Rivian R1T, as it saw a 65% drop from this time in 2023.
The first quarter of 2024 was great for Ford and the Tesla Cybertruck. The Ford F-150 Lightning had 8,589 models registered. The Cybertruck had 1,791, and the Rivian R1T had 1,786. Rivan is down by well over 50 percent. Regarding price, the Tesla Cybertruck is far more expensive than the other best pickup trucks in the segment, so it’ll be interesting to see how sales go down the road.
