When most of us think of camping, it involves a tent, a couple of well-used sleeping bags, and a campfire under the stars. For those who prefer a softer bed and all the conveniences of home, a camper is a preferred method of enjoying their next adventure. And for a select few, camping involves a luxury motorhome that takes “glamping” to another level. Newmar, the premier manufacturer of high-end RVs, offers a model for $405,000 that’s nothing short of a masterpiece.

You may never have the chance to own one of these luxury RVs, but it’s worth checking out what makes this coach so special.

The 2021 Newmar Dutch Star

The 2021 Newmar Dutch Star Diesel Motor Coach retails for $404,971, Newmar‘s website shows. That’s not even the most expensive model, whose price hovers around $1.3 million. But the Dutch Star is still opulent. It also feels like home as soon as you set foot on the three-step front entry into the spacious living space. The exquisite real-wood residential cabinetry catches your attention as your eyes wander to the designer ceiling.

Seating options are abundant with a jack-knife or full-size sofa, theater seating, or dual recliners. The cockpit boasts six-way powered, heated, ultra-leather-covered captain’s chairs for the utmost comfort.

Technology features include a retractable Samsung 4K LED TV set, Sony Blu-ray player, Bluetooth-compatible audio system, and Bose soundbar. Side and rearview cameras come standard, and a 360-degree camera system is optional. A built-in Rand McNally navigational system is also available.

Sleeping quarters feature a plush queen or king pillowtop mattress with the option for a Sleep Number upgrade. Bunks are also an option for bringing the grandkids along on road trips.

The upgraded appliance package includes a brushed aluminum Whirlpool residential refrigerator, two-burner stove, and stainless-steel convection oven. There’s even an option for a dishwasher.

This Newmar RV is truly a masterpiece

The Newmar Dutch Star sits on a Freightliner or Spartan chassis. Packing a Cummins diesel engine, it puts out 450 hp and 1,250 lb-ft of torque.

A full-wall slide-out in the living space provides ample room for entertaining guests, making everyone feel at home. The Dutch Star is available in 27-, 40-, and 43-foot lengths, and there are 13 floor plans to choose from.

Newmar is known for its full-paint Masterpiece finish exclusive to the brand. Applied in-house, the exterior graphics are a thing of beauty. There are four exterior color choices and four interior decor palettes to allow owners a customized feel to their coach.

Heating and air-conditioning units provide consistent temperatures for the utmost comfort. Heat pumps operate the system throughout the coach, with optional radiant heat below the floor tiles.

Cathedral ceilings in the rear bathroom provide six extra inches of height, setting Newmar apart from the competition. Mosaic tiles accent the walk-in shower. Several floor plans also offer an additional half-bath.

Safety is a priority with Comfort Drive steering technology and OnGuard collision mitigation technology. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, tire-pressure monitoring, auto traction control, and electronic stability control. A keyless entry door with a touchpad and doorbell provides peace of mind while parked.

What is a diesel pusher?

The Newmar Dutch Star’s hefty price tag comes courtesy of the diesel engine. Lower-priced brands generally run on gas-powered engines and, though capable, don’t offer the same performance.

diesel-powered motor coach is referred to in the industry as a diesel pusher. It literally pushes the coach up any mountain with ease. The torque allows for a faster response than a gas engine, thrusting the vehicle anywhere it needs to go.

NADA Guides points out diesel is 25 percent more efficient than gasoline. Diesel engines also last considerably longer, and depreciation is slower on diesel pushers. Advantages include better towing capacity, fewer service visits, and enhanced road performance.

Ultimately, RV ownership comes down to personal preference. But if you have $500,000 to spend on a motorhome purchase, the Newmar Dutch Star is worth considering.
