An unfortunate fact regarding the automotive industry is that some excellent SUVs get discontinued. Of course, many people think of options like the Nissan Xterra being discontinued. However, many other notable SUVs are no longer in production. Automakers always have their reasoning for discontinuing vehicles, but car fans still want their favorites to return, much like the Bronco 2021 already has.

Here are three discontinued SUVs that need a comeback.

The GMC Typhoon and Envoy should return

GMC has many awesome discontinued SUVs, so it deserves more recognition. Many have called the GMC Typhoon the first performance SUV. This two-door SUV has a turbocharged 4.3-liter V6 under its hood. The maximum output for this rare beauty is 280 horsepower with a torque of 350 lb-ft. Perhaps the best part of the GMC Typhoon’s performance is that it accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 5.3 seconds.

For context, the GMC Typhoon’s acceleration time is faster than many sports cars. This SUV was definitely quicker than the V8 Mustang of the same model year. In addition, it was also faster than the Ferrari 348ts. This discontinued SUV does the quarter-mile test in only 14.1 seconds at 95 miles per hour.

Unfortunately, GMC discontinued the Typhoon SUV after only two model years and only 4,697 units produced. Regarding the GMC Envoy, the automaker produced it for two generations between 1998 and 2009. Sadly, GMC discontinued the mid-size SUV due to low sales. In today’s world, there are several directions GMC could take a brand new Envoy.

The Mitsubishi Montero is a discontinued SUV that needs a comeback

The Mitsubishi Montero entered the market in the early 1980s. It remained in production for four generations. However, before its eventual demise after the 2006 model year, the Montero had amassed quite the following. However, the vehicle wasn’t as popular in its later years due to the rise of the crossover.

Despite being in production for so long, the 1990 Mitsubishi Montero holds a special place in the hearts of many. According to Edmunds, The Mitsubishi Montero 1990 has a 3.0-liter V6 engine under its hood. This Montero model has a maximum output of 143 horsepower and a torque of 168 lb-ft. Many will remember that the automaker also made the Mitsubishi Montero Sport.

The Nissan Xterra SUV needs to return

The Nissan Xterra is an icon regarding discontinued SUVs. Nissan made this off-roading-focused SUV until 2015. Unfortunately, the Xterra simply didn’t fit in with modern vehicles. Crossovers stole the market share, and the Nissan SUV had lousy fuel economy.

The 2015 Nissan Xterra is among the most discussed from the SUV’s lineup. The 2015 Xterra has a 4.0-liter V6 engine with a maximum output of 261 horsepower. It accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour between 6.5 seconds and 7 seconds. Despite the SUV’s performance, many people genuinely appreciate the Xterra exterior because it’s super rugged.

Of course, many other discontinued SUVs need a comeback. However, the GMC Typhoon, Mitsubishi Montero, and Nissan Xterra are beyond iconic. And of course, the GMC Envoy deserves an honorable mention.
