How Much Longer Will Toyota Continue to Make Its Unpopular Full-Size SUV?
The Toyota Sequoia is one of the best large SUVs. Not only does it have a long history on the market, but it’s been a reliable option for a long time. However, the popularity of the full-size Toyota SUV has fallen over the years. Unfortunately, 2023 and 2024 haven’t been kind to the Toyota Sequoia, and it can’t keep up with more popular options like the Chevrolet Tahoe.
The Toyota Sequoia isn’t doing so well in 2024
The Toyota Sequoia might still be one of the best large SUVs, but its sales don’t show a market that has a ton of demand for it. According to Good Car Bad Car, it’s only sold 5,958 units so far in 2024. Additionally, the Toyota Sequoia only sold 20,557 units in all of 2023. For comparison, the Chevrolet Tahoe sold over 23,323 units in 2024 alone, and over 110,000 people bought it in 2023.
Things get even worse for what some call one of the best large SUVs when you look at its history. For example, the last time over 40,000 people bought the full-size Toyota SUV was all the way back in 2005. Beyond that, it’s had some pretty disastrous years when it comes to sales, with some being due to low supplies after the pandemic. It should be noted that Toyota Sequoia sales are up a tad in 2024.
Why aren’t people buying what some call one of the best large SUVs
The Toyota Sequoia saw a redesign for the 2023 model. With the changes came improved fuel economy, an updated infotainment screen, and more. However, even with the changes, many feel that the Sequoia is stuck in the past. Toyota didn’t change it enough about the Sequoia to make it truly compete with options like the Chevrolet Tahoe and even models from the likes of Kia and Hyundai in 2024.
Another reason is that more people check vehicle ratings nowadays, and the Sequoia hasn’t faired well in this area in a while. For example, the 2024 Toyota Sequoia only has an overall 79 out of 100 from J.D. Power. This score isn’t bad. However, it’s not on the same level as some of its rivals, such as the Chevrolet Tahoe. It has an 83 from the marketing research firm.
It’s hard to say how long the automaker will continue to make its unpopular Sequoia despite it having low sales in 2023 and 2024. It has its qualities, but it seems most people prefer other full-size SUVs. Of course, public reception could change. However, Toyota recently redesigned it, and most full-size SUV buyers still don’t like it enough to buy it.
