Police officers pulling people over for speeding is nothing new. Speeding is one of the biggest reasons a driver could be pulled over for a traffic stop. However, things get more extreme when more than one vehicle is pulled over for this dangerous infraction. Sadly, this happened recently in Ohio, where almost 200 people were speeding excessively.

A traffic stop wasn’t enough for this many people

Sadly, many cities across the country have been plagued by street takeovers by racers. Sadly, these dangerous actions usually warrant more than a single traffic stop. Luckily, the city is cracking down on these illegal street takeovers with what it is calling “Operation Burnout.” Of course, this name has a special meaning for gearheads.

According to WBNS 10, this is what happened in Columbus, Ohio, on the night of October 5th. Reports say a massive group of racers met near Alum Creek Drive to take over the streets and cause mayhem. However, police officers, a helicopter, and various other legal entities were waiting for them. Naturally, this force was necessary as there were too many racers for a simple traffic stop.

Ultimately, this crackdown was a massive success for local law enforcement and the community it protects. They ended with 44 cars in impound, 16 recovered guns, and 186 arrests. Sadly, 46 of the arrests were underaged individuals. Notably, many of the drivers were going over 100 miles per hour. Still, there is more to be done as many bad actors in the area could still consider engaging in these street takeovers.

Someone from the police department had this to say, “These aren’t the car enthusiasts. These aren’t the good people who want to go out and show off their cars. These are the hostile street takeovers. These are violent offenders that are laying siege to cities.”

Additionally, the city attorney for Columbus also said, “We are really sending a message to folks. Stop doing this in our community. We take it very seriously. The citizens are fed up with it. We are fed up with it.”
