The Murano is one of the top SUVs in the midsize segment. Naturally, this means that used Nissan Murano models are in high demand. However, like all vehicles, there are a few less-than-stellar models of the beloved Nissan SUV. Some of the worst are the 2004, 2009, and 2015 Nissan Murano models. The great thing is that there are several quality models to pick from.

The 2015 Nissan Murano is not among the top SUVs

The 2015 Nissan Murano is not one of the best used models as it has a number of issues. Perhaps most significantly, this model experiences major transmission problems. There have been several reports of the transmission shuddering at lower RPMs. Unfortunately, the problem got so bad for some owners that they needed a transmission replacement. Notably, the 2015 Murano has a CVT.

There are also reports of exhaust issues with this model, as well as various leaks. In general, the 2015 Nissan Murano has a decently long list of recalls. The troubled SUV also made news in 2024 when one spontaneously caught fire while parked. According to USA Today, the automaker is investigating the cause of the fire as it’s not widespread in used Murano models.

The 2009 model isn’t great

The 2009 Nissan Murano also misses the top SUVs list due to some notable issues. Luckily, this is a model that fewer people would consider due to its age. Still, some could be tempted to buy it if they need a cheap SUV. Like the 2015 Nissan Murano, the continuously variable transmission in this model is far from perfect. 

In particular, the 2009 Murano can experience overheating and sudden loss of power. It also makes various noises. The midsize Nissan SUV has also had battery issues where it stops charging and often needs a boost. Many drivers have tried replacing the battery but to no avail. Despite this, the 2004 Murano is largely considered the worst as it has the most complaints. Generally, the 2004 through 2009 models are best left behind. 

The great thing about the Nissan Murano being one of the top SUVs is that it has several great used models. This is particularly the case since the 2017 model, as it’s been stellar since. Of course, no vehicle is perfect, but buyers can mostly buy these without fearing major maintenance issues. Buyers should always take the time to research any vehicle they consider purchasing to ensure quality.
