Many car buyers look for used Volkswagen Atlas models when they are in the market for one of the top SUVs. This is because people respect the automaker for quality and reliability. However, some used Volkswagen cars and SUVs have expensive issues. Of course, all drivers have different experiences, but it may be best to think twice about the used Volkswagen Atlas models from specific model years. 

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas is not one of the best used models

When it comes to used Volkswagen Atlas models, the one from 2018 might be the worst. Of course, this also happens to be one of the first models of the SUV, so it makes sense that it would have its fair share of issues. J.D. Power only gave it a 66 out of 100 for quality and reliability, which the marketing research firm calls “fair”. 

Engine stalling is one of the most common issues with this used Volkswagen Atlas model. In this case, the engine stalling is the result of sensor issues that cause a less-than-stellar gas-to-air ratio. The problem is that the sensors can be pretty expensive to fix. 

The 2018 Volkswagen Atlas also suffers from coolant leaks. The most prominent of the leaks result from the radiator, but owners have also reported liquid coming from gaskets and the coolant lines. Each of these components can cost a pretty penny to replace. Readers should also note that the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas also has issues that make it problematic.

The 2021 Atlas is not among the top SUVs

The 2021 model is a better used Volkswagen Atlas than the 2018 edition. However, it’s still not one of the top SUVs for people looking for something reliable, as it also has some notable issues. This is the case even if the problems are less severe than the ones in the previously mentioned Atlas models. 

The most expensive reported issue with the 2021 Atlas has to do with loss of fuel pressure. This issue stems from fuel pump issues. The good thing is that fuel pumps can be covered under an active warranty. However, this is a reason to think twice and to consider something else. 

Less serious are the issues with the seats in this used Volkswagen Atlas. In particular, the power functions on some vehicles are prone to failure. This isn’t the most widespread thing, but it is an inconvenience if it happens. Luckily, the Atlas has improved in recent years, but it’s not one of the most popular options in its segment.
