People on the market for the best new or used cars have several options. There are sports cars, sedans, trucks, and, of course, super popular SUVs. However, these options also extend to powertrains. While four-cylinder, inline-6, and V6 engines are more common, many drivers still seek out models with a V8, as some of the top sports cars have this engine type. Still, some may wonder about the long-term reliability of these more powerful vehicles. 

Are V8 cars less reliable than inline-four or inline-6 engines?

Unfortunately, V8 engines are becoming much less common than they once were. For the most part, this is the case as automakers find ways to make vehicles more efficient for both buyers and the good of the planet. However, many car enthusiasts and general drivers prefer them over four-cylinder and inline-6 engines. 

Naturally, when buying a vehicle, it’s important to consider its long-term reliability. Notably, most people look to the engine in this regard as it’s one of the most expensive components of a car. So, are V8s less reliable than four-cylinder or inline-6 engines? No. In fact, depending on the age of the car, some auto mechanics might say they last longer. However, the conversation doesn’t end there when it comes to more modern engines. Thanks to technological advances, newer four-cylinder and inline-6, or V6s, may last as long as their larger rivals. So, because of this, except for rare cases, engine displacement may not play a role in reliability regarding newer vehicles. 

There are drawbacks to having a V8

As mentioned, some of the top sports cars and pickup trucks still use V8s instead of inline-four or inline-6 engines. However, they are becoming less common because they have some drawbacks. Of course, they are less efficient, which means drivers will spend more on gas. They also have a bigger environmental footprint. 

However, the drawbacks don’t stop there. Because V8 engines are larger, maintenance will be more expensive. This is the case simply because their parts cost more than they do for inline-four or V6 engines. Additionally, vehicles with V8 engines are usually more expensive than models with smaller displacements. 

Another drawback is that these engines are heavier, which means the same is true for the cars they power. Because of this, models that use these engines may not handle or corner as well as other vehicles. Still, the best new or used cars with V8s can be solid options that last as long as or longer than other vehicles with smaller engines.
