What’s New With the 2023 Volvo XC40?
The entire Volvo has been updated for the 2023 model year as the automaker now only offers either hybrid or fully electric models, and Google built-in, which was previously equipped in some offerings, is now standard across the marque’s range. The XC40 rides into 2023 with additional updates as the compact crossover has been mildly refreshed. Let’s look at everything that separates the 2023 model from its predecessor.
The 2023 Volvo XC40 has gone hybrid
The entire Volvo lineup is now electrified in some way. The 2023 XC40 now sports a mild hybrid engine as standard in one of two guises— dubbed B4 or B5 — which has slightly improved the efficiency of all models and increased the standard iteration’s power.
The standard B4 engine, equipped in front-wheel drive models, pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-vold mild hybrid system for a total output of 194 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 XC40 pumped out 184 hp with its non-hybrid T4 engine. The B5 unit, fitted to all-wheel drive XC40s, delivers 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, the same output as the 2022 exclusively internal combustion XC40.
The mild hybrid system equates to some minor savings at the pumps. The 2023 FWD and AWD models are rated one combined mpg higher than 2022 models. The FWD 2023 XC40 is rated for 27 combined mpg by the EPA, with the AWD version ringing in at 26 mpg combined.
The XC40 sports refreshed looks and updated trims
The Volvo XC40 is a bit of a shapeshifter as it is the basis for the all-electric XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge electric coupe-SUV. But for 2023, less separates the outward appearance of the three models.
The new XC40 now wears the same squared-off front fascia as the C40 Recharge with a new front bumper and frameless grille plate. Volvo’s “Thor’s Hammer” headlights have also been tweaked. Effectively, the XC40 now sports much of the styling of the attractive C40 without the loss of practicality due to the fastback roof.
The trim levels for the 2023 XC40 offer much of the same amenities as the outgoing model but with new names. Three trims will again be offered with the Core serving as the base model below the Plus and Ultimate. All trims are available with either the B4 or more powerful B5 engine with all-wheel drive.
Plus and Ultimate buyers can also opt for either “Bright” or “Dark” exterior trim, with Bright fitting chrome detailing and Dark sporting glossy black. The XC40 can also be had in three new colors — Bright Dusk Metallic, Platinum Grey Metallic, and Silver Dawn Metallic.
Google built-in joins the Volvo XC40 lineup
The highlight of the interior changes for the 2023 Volvo XC40 is the addition of Google built-in infotainment. The system allows for seamless smartphone connectivity with Google Maps serving as the onboard navigation system with Google Assistant voice control and Google Play, as the name suggests, built into the system. Apple CarPlay is still standard.
The XC40 is the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup to still rely on internal combustion, but buyers looking to make the all-electric switch can consider the all-electric XC40 Recharge or the more stylish but less practical C40 Recharge.
