The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE is the second all-electric sedan from the German luxury automaker following the introduction of its new EV flagship, the EQS sedan, in 2022. The all-new model has made a notable debut with respectable specs, plenty of cutting-edge tech, and unique styling. But what segment of buyers does it best cater to?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE has an impressive spec sheet

The 2023 EQE’s lineup includes three models — the rear-wheel drive, single motor 350+, the all-wheel drive 350 4Matic, and the more powerful 500 4Matic — plus a performance-tuned AMG version. All versions are fitted with a 90.6kWh battery pack.

The 350+ delivers 288 hp and 319 lb-ft of torque from its single electric motor, and as expected, it’s the most efficient of the group, with Mercedes claiming a max range of 305 miles. The 350 4Matic uses dual motors and has the same horsepower figure, but its torquier is at 564 lb-ft and is limited to 260 miles of range. The 500 4Matic ups the ante to 402 hp and 633 lb-ft of torque and is good for a 0-60 mph time of 4.5 seconds, according to the Mercedes-Benz.

Charging times are also notable. Mercedes claims the EQE’s DC fast charging capability of up to 170kW will re-juice its battery pack from 10 to 80 percent charged in 32 minutes.

A long list of standard features is highlighted by synthetic leather upholstery, a Burmester sound system, ambient interior lighting, a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen, MBUX’s latest infotainment system, and a suite of driver’s aids and safety features. Higher trims offer a bevy of additional creature comforts, and models can be outfitted with standout amenities like Mercedes’ Hyperscreen.

Prices start at $74,900 for the 350+ model, with the 500 4Matic topping the non-AMG range at $85,900 MSRP.

Given its stats, the EQE has strong appeal among those wanting a luxury EV sedan wearing the Tri-Star but don’t want to dish out the six-figure prices of the Mercedes-Benz EQS. The EQE provides many of the same amenities and features in a smaller and more athletic package. It can’t match the range or power of the EQS, but it presents about $25,000 in savings over its bigger brother. That’s certainly enough to sway many buyers into the EQE’s camp.

The EQE could appeal to prospective Tesla Model S buyers

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE also has market appeal among those interested in putting a Model S in their garage, which is sized similarly to the EQE. The EQE can’t match the Tesla’s 400-plus mile range or its ample 670 hp, but even with Tesla’s recent price cuts, the top-of-the-range EQE 500 4Matic is just slightly more expensive than the base Model S.

Although it’s down on power and range, many buyers are likely to be drawn to EQE’s more robust list of features and creature comforts, and of course, Mercedes-Benz’s reputation for build quality over the often-questionable refinement of the Model S.

The 2023 EQE makes a strong debut

A starting MSRP of $74,900 puts the 2023 Mercedes-Benz EQE out of the price range of many, but for those who can dish out the dough, it can easily be argued Mercedes-Benz’s new EV is worth the price of admission. Its ride quality is sublime, its cabin is luxuriously appointed, and it provides the performance and range to meet most drivers’ daily needs.
